Read our summer electrical tips to find out how to save some money on your electricity bill and stay safe around electricity.
- Block the hot summer sun with blinds, shades and/or drapes to keep heat out and keep your rooms cooler.
- Adjust your thermostat to the highest temperature you can tolerate to keep your energy costs down. Use a programmable thermostat to automatically adjust it for convenience.
- Summer is a good time to install a standby power generator. You can’t prepare for a lot of emergencies, but you can be ready for a power outage.
- Install ceiling fans and set them to run counter-clockwise to push air down and keep the air moving for a cooling effect.
- Wash your clothes in cold water if possible to cut water heating costs and energy usage.
- Replace your light bulbs with LED bulbs that use less electricity and produce the same amount of light.
- Make sure outdoor outlets are GFCI outlets and test to make sure they are functioning properly.
- Outdoors, be careful when using electricity around water. Hire a qualified electrician to wire pools, spas, and docks.
- Use smart outlets and bulbs to control your lights and appliances from your mobile device. You can also use them to control lights to make your house appear lived-in while you’re away on vacation.
- Take advantage of the nice weather and cook on the grill or serve food that doesn’t require cooking.
